Where We Are

Day # 1, May 16, 2005 We took the bus down to Portland where we spent the night. Tomorrow we will head for Seattle.
Day # 2, May 17, 2005 At the mall before we left to go on the airplane and we were in the mall a man asked me "Why aren't you in school?" I replied that I was with my mom and we were going to take a plane to Seattle and bike back here. I was happy and positive that I would have a fine time going through security to get on the plane. Yeah right! I won their two minute prize of getting searched, including all my bags. On the last flight I fell asleep but afterword, I felt like I was going to hurl chunks.
Day # 3, May 18, 2005 We went to the Aquarium which was awesome. There was an underwater glass dome where you could look up at the fish. There were touch tanks which were cool. We met up with a friend and her baby. We went to Pike Street Market which is like Fanueil Hall in Boston. We had lunch and went to my cousin's magic store. Then we took a cab to a private airport where we waited until a plane came. We flew to Friday Harbor which is a lot like Bar Harbor. Our bikes weren't ready so we stayed with our friend at her hotel room.
Day # 4 May 19, 2005 I waited until my bike was ready and we stocked up for camping in San Juan County Park. Which is at the other side of the island, 10 miles away. After we got out there we pitched the tent which is drafty. Then we looked at the ocean. We saw a deer 30 feet away from us eating in a field.
Day # 5 May 20, 2005 We woke up ate breakfast and got ready for our bike ride to Roche Harbor. I sprinted up a 200 yard hill like the one going to Presque Isle. I saw Star Wars III, Revenge of the Sith. Then we headed back to camp with one of our friends who has a bike rack.
Day # 6 May 21, 2005 Woke up ate breakfast and went into town. We looked for propane tanks that would fit our stove. No luck. We went back to the campsite and I took a nap. Then hung out around the campfire.
Day # 7 May 22, 2005 We woke up at 3:30 am. Broke camp, loaded the bikes and missed the ferry by 15 minutes. We saw an eagle stealing road kill from some crows. It was really close up on top of a telephone pole. We ate some breakfast and waited for the next ferry. On the ferry, I stood out on the deck where you can see the ocean and islands better. At one point in time, I had to brace myself from the wind. We got off the ferry and messed up the directions. We got it right and biked awhile. We had to walk our bikes across this high highway bridge that was probably about a mile long. This biker was ahead of us and he walked his bike so we had to walk ours. We had the wind at our back, finally, which was nice. We got lost in Sedro Wooley and I got a flat tire. So we had to walk to the campground.
Day # 8 May 23, 2005 We woke up late and took it easy. We found that the spare tire had been repaired and was too big. We took the transit into Burlington to get the tire repaired and another spare tire and tube. I needed a bike pump because my valve is different from my mom's valve. We caught the next bus to the mall where we transferred to Wal Mart for the stove cartridges. Once we bought the cartridges we were waiting at the bus stops by ourselves then I started to cut through the wires holding the bike pump to the box. I stabbed my thumb and cut an artery. Blood squirted everywhere and on everything. We put tissues on it and took the bus to the mall. We ate lunch there. I had tissues on my thumb. We waited for the bus and took it to the hospital. We waited and waited to be allowed into the emergency room. The doctor called his tools the "implements of mass destruction." When he was giving me the shot of pain killer I laughed the whole time. He had to stitch the artery together and four stitches on the outside. As soon as we left the hospital, the bus came.
Day # 9 May 24, 2005 Today wasn't too bad we stayed on the same road for basically the whole trip. Then we went onto State Highway 20. We stayed at a beautiful campsite. I wanted to take a shower. I put in the quarters and it didn't work. I was angry, cold and dirty.
Day # 10, May 25, 2005 We broke camp, jumped on our bikes and got to Newhalem. We found a campsite and the information center. We spent some time there. I got a survival handkerchief and some eagle cards. After riding my bike to a dam and running a mile and three quarters and at each bench I did one more push up than before, I locked my bike and messed it up somehow. A guy named Danny cut the cord with a hatchet and a hammer. Then I washed my legs, arms and head under the water spigot.
Day # 11, May 26, 2005 Today we started the large climb of the first two passes of the Cascades. I took lots of pictures of several mountains. There was still snow on the peaks. Mom started to get really tired so we set up camp on the side of the road.
Day # 12 May 27, 2005 We woke up at 3:48 am. We got out on the road before there was much traffic. Finally we got to Washington Pass (5,480' elevation). Coming down there was a hairpin turn. Looking down you could see the road and it looked about 6" wide. The grade was 7 %. We had to let our brake pads cool several times. We ate lunch at a store that had a whole bunch of organic stuff. From there we biked to one of our friend's house. She is with her daughter at state's for a track event. I was bored so I watched Indiana Jones the Last Crusade. Then I went to bed.
Day # 13 May 28, 2005 woke up at 6:00AM and layed there. I updated this web-sight. I sprinted into Mazama and got upto 41.9 MPH with an unloaded bike. I repacked my saddle bags and watched Ice age.
Day # 14, May 29. 2005 Sunday We woke up early and got on our bikes. I heard a PING! Two of my spokes broke. We walked back to our friend's house, talked and went to the bike shop. My rear tire was fixed and ready to rumble. We got back and I talked to her daughter. We packed our bikes and were off. We got lost in Winthrop but came straight. On a road my retainer fell out of my pocket and was on the road some where. Just when we started to worry I saw it. We met three other bikers going the same route as us. We talked a while, ate dinner and took a shower and went to bed.
Day # 15, May 30, 2005, Monday We woke up early and got started. We biked up Loup Loup Pass. When we were at the bottom of the mountain I heard a cracking sound. We stopped and I broke another spoke! We biked into Okonogan, ate lunch and found the bike shop. CLOSED. We stayed at a hotel. I watched Sponge Bob while Mom took a nap. We walked to a super market, re-supplied and walked back.
Day # 16, May 31, 2005, Tuesday Woke up and watched tv. Got my wheel rebuilt and a couple tools. We stopped at a nice little store where we ate lunch. Biked on highway 20 several miles. Boring. We stayed at an Ice Cream camping spot and met a couple that told us how to get to Havillah.
Day # 17, June 1, 2005, Wednesday We ate breakfast at the restaurant where we had dinner the night before. We had gone a mile and 7/10 and I got a bloody nose. We had gone up a big freakin hill then the bolt holding my rack broke. I fixed it. We finally got to Havillah. We were told that it was "mainly down hill to Chesaw". We started up and it was long to the top. It was a great down hill. A lady that we talked to re-directed us to go the correct way because the sign had been twisted a quarter turn. We were wondering where we were going to stay when the lady who re-directed us let us stay in the rodeo grounds. We set up camp, ate dinner and planned how to go to Curlew.
Day # 18, June 2, 2005, Thursday Down hill the whole day except for a couple up hills. We saw a few lakes and a guy going fishing with his dog on a small pontoon boat. We ate lunch in front of a little store, replenished the food supply and stayed in a really nice little hotel. We dried the tent and washed clothes. I also watched Home Alone Two. We want to get to Colville tomorrow. A dog chased us.
Day # 19, June 3, 2005, Friday I delivered the movie and packed my bike. We biked up Boulder Pass and had a nice ride down. We biked on a hilly road with truckers that could care less about you and more about their load. We stopped at a small store and met a nice lady. We got to Colville just before it started to downpour. We ate at a REALLY good Mexican Restaurant called Chico Burrito. I had deep fried ice cream and went to bed.
Day # 20, June 4, 2005, Saturday Biked looking for bike shops. Bought some food at Safeway and visited the Farmer's Market. At the skate park in the school grounds, I saw three skateboarders and took some pictures. Basically up hill the whole time. We saw a tree fall right in front of us. At a small campsite that we stayed at we met a couple and they are headed to Connecticut. Our camping site was right on a little lake.
Day # 22, June 5, 2005, Sunday Ate breakfast at a nice little restaurant. Mom flopped her bike in front of a church. Everyone took care of her and they were really nice. It started to rain ferociously and the wind was nasty. All my rain gear worked, spectacularly. When we were leaving Usk, I found $20.00. We set up camp at a nice little campground.
Day # 23, June 6, 2005, Monday Flat and hilly. Nice day. Accidentally walked into a "Lounge" looking for breakfast. We walked our bikes about a mile because the road was suicidal (SR 41). Besides that it was nice. We had very little traffic on the road we were on. Then we were on another highway. When we were on the bike path into Sandpoint, Idaho, we were happy. We stayed at Best Western and ate lunch at the Panhandler's Restaurant.
Day # 24, June 7, 2005, Tuesday Slept in and worked on Algebra. Found a bike shop called Alpine Designs that builds custom bikes and paints them. I watched Brandon repair my bike. We bought necessary food and supplies and got our bikes back. We went to the library and used the computer. Just as I was going out to get one of my saddlebags, it rained so hard it was like hail. We went to Wal Mart to get our film developed. Once we had gotten back to the hotel, I packed my bags and went right to sleep. Day # 25, June 8, 2005, Wednesday Nice scenery when leaving Sandpoint. We stopped in a town called Hope. We ate breakfast with three retired people. We finally got into Montana. I was so tired I biked on the wrong side of the road. We set up camp and I went straight to sleep. Day # 26, June 9, 2005, Thursday We got up late and we got to a small pantry store. We ate lunch and started on a scenic highway. Once we were on route 2 we just wanted to get off of it. We ate dinner at a nice cafe. I went looking for a bike shop to replace my cassette and chain. The bike shop went out of business. Mary, the lady that I talked to said that she would drive by and check on us. I called several people and finally got hold of the bike shop owner in Troy. Mary took us to Troy (an 18 mile trip one way) Dennis replaced my cassette and chain. We got back to Libby around 10:30 pm and asleep around 11. Day # 27, June 10, 2005, Friday We woke up late and ate breakfast. I sent my cassette and chain home. We biked to a nice look out over Libby Dam. We ate lunch at Koocanusa Resort. I played in the lake, then had a shower and dinner. Went to bed very quickly. Day # 28, June 11, 2005, Saturday Woke up, broke camp in the rain and got started. Up hill and down hills until the Koocanusa Bridge. I walked across it and back. Once we got started, it poured cats and dogs. We heard thunder and kept going. We met a guy with Adventure Cycling. Once we got to Rexford, we decided to camp with the Adventure Cycling group. Don helped me fix my saddlebags stay on longer. After dinner I went straight to sleep. Day # 29, June 12, 2005, Sunday Woke up , ate breakfast and Mom got a flat. We patched it and got started off an hour later. It rained on and off for awhile. Once we got on hwy 93 it rained. I didn't want to go to the bathroom in the woods, so I biked 2 miles into the woods at a state recreation area. MMMUUUDDD!!! It was fun getting there but getting back was uphill. You would think that my bike was a cycle cross bike. The only thing that kept us going was foood. We stayed at a hotel called Pine Lodge. Biked 70 miles. Day # 30 We had a day off and that was relaxing. We did the tourist thing and went back to the hotel and got ready to go to the bottem of Logan pass in Glacer Natonal Park.
